Jason Rogers said his heart resides along the banks of the St. John River.

Even though he was born in Presque Isle, Maine and is currently living in Nashville, Tenn., the country singer carries with him fond memories from his childhood homes in Wicklow and Bristol.

Rogers said Carleton County helped make him the man he is today and he tries to reflect the qualities he picked up here with every song he writes.

“I spent my whole childhood there, until the age of 18 or so, and that’s when I beat it for Nashville,” he said.

“It’s a beautiful place and I still think about it to this day.”

The singer-songwriter recently released his self-titled debut album and now he’s busy trying to get it played by country radio stations scattered between Nashville and New Brunswick.

He said navigating the country music industry has been a learning experience and he’s met a lot of interesting people along the way. Rogers said he was able to figure out who was genuinely trying to help his career by using his small-town ingenuity.

“I think it’s very 50-50. There are a lot of great people and a lot of bad people in this industry,” he said.

“But I’m a smart person. I was (brought up) in New Brunswick and they always taught you not to get screwed by people.”

He said finishing his album has allowed people to take his songs home with them – and get people talking about what they’ve heard.

“It’s definitely becoming a good feedback thing,” he said.

“Until people know you, or get to hear your CD, it’s hard for them to say too much.

“But so far, people seem to like it just fine … This has been a big thing for me, because I spent about four years making it. I’m just glad that it’s out there.”

Rogers is hoping to make it back to New Brunswick soon, but no dates are booked so far.
